Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy


Pregnancy is the most beautiful and delicate phase of a women’s life. So it’s important to know what you should eat and what you should avoid to keep yourself and baby healthy.

The immune system of pregnant women is weak so you and baby can get infected by bacteria, viruses and parasites easily. There are some foods which should consume rarely to keep yourself and your baby healthy. Here is a list of the foods you should avoid or minimize during pregnancy-

1. Unpasteurized Soft cheese
Unpasteurized soft cheese like brie, feta, fresco, queso Blanco etc should be avoided because they contain Listeria. It can harm your unborn baby. Complications can be miscarriage, premature birth or birth defects. You should always take pasteurized cheese.

2. Fish containing mercury 
It is advisable to avoid fishes containing a high level of mercury. Mercury can cause brain damage and developmental delay in the baby. Shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel contain a high amount of mercury. Fish like chunk light tuna can be eaten 2 times a week.

3. Shellfish 
Shellfish like oysters, clams and mussels should be avoided because they are contaminated by various bacteria, parasites, toxins and parasites. They can cause serious infections, food poisoning. Cooking can prevent the infections but some microbes are not killed by cooking. So, it’s better to avoid eating during pregnancy.

4. Meat 
Raw, undercooked, refrigerated smoked meat must be avoided because they contain certain bacteria like toxoplasma, E.coli, listeria which causes life-threatening diseases to the unborn baby like mental retardation, epilepsy, blindness. Prepare meat hygienically and make sure that it is cooked thoroughly.

5. Raw eggs 
Raw eggs and food containing raw eggs should be avoided because it contains salmonella. It causes food poisoning, diarrhea, vomiting. As they are a great source of proteins so make sure that egg white and yolk is cooked properly.

6. Raw sprouts 
Raw sprouts are contaminated with salmonella can cause food poisoning. You can eat them by cooking them properly or fry it because they are an excellent source of proteins and minerals.

7. Canned food 
Canned foods are packed and stored for a long time; they have harmful bacteria which can affect fetal. So it’s recommended to avoid eating canned food.

8. Caffeine 
Pregnant and breastfeeding should limit the intake of caffeine by 200mg a day, means 2-3 cups of coffee a day. Caffeine can easily pass through placenta to fetus and placenta and fetus does not have digestive enzymes to metabolize caffeine. It leads to spontaneous abortions, premature birth and low birth weight of baby.

9. Alcohol 
It’s always advisable to completely avoid the alcohol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It also increases the chances of miscarriage, facial deformities, heart defects and mental retardation of the baby.

10. Unwashed fruits and vegetables 
Unwashed cabbage or lettuce must be avoided. Unwashed fruits or vegetables are contaminated by bacteria and parasites which cause damage to the fetus. Always wash and peel before eating.

11. Nuts which causes allergies
No need to avoid nuts unless and until you are allergic to it. Some nuts like peanuts, cashews, filberts cause skin rashes to your body. Always consult your doctor before adding nuts to your pregnancy diet.
