Best Remedies for Sensitive Teeth

For those with sensitive teeth, certain activities like brushing, flossing, eating and drinking cold or hot can cause sharp and temporary pain in the teeth. The reason for sensitive teeth is removal of tooth enamel to expose tip of the teeth and cementum removal to expose root of the teeth.teeth-pain

Tooth decay, gum diseases, cracked tooth or recently any dental procedure can also cause sensitivity. Here are some methods to treat sensitive teeth and to reduce pain-

1. Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth
There are many toothpastes in the market available for sensitive teeth. It should contain potassium nitrates or strontium chloride. Use brush with soft bristles because hard bristles can stretch the enamel. Brush the teeth gently with this paste and if your teeth are over sensitive, use finger to rub toothpaste.

2. Fluoride 
Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel and reduces the pain. Rinse with fluoride containing mouthwash once in a day. You can also use fluoride varnish for quick relief. It can be easily available at pharmacy.

3. Saltwater 
Saltwater provides quick relief. Mix half teaspoon of salt in a cup of lukewarm water. Rinse your mouth with it. If it’s painful then keep the water in mouth for few minutes and then spit it out. Rinse with clean water. Repeat this twice a day for good results.

4. Oregano oil 
Oregano oil is effective in teeth sensitivity because it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties. Mix 4-5 drops of oil in a quarter cup of lukewarm water and use it as a mouthwash. You can also apply 2-3 drops of oil on the affected tooth. Leave it for 15 minutes and then rinse your mouth with lukewarm water.

5. Baking soda 
You can use baking soda to make your teeth harder and desensitized. Mix half teaspoon of baking soda with a half cup of lukewarm water. Rinse your mouth with it.

6. Limit the consumption of acidic food and drinks 
High acid contained foods and drinks dissolve the tooth enamel and make the teeth more sensitive. Avoid red wine, pickles, orange juice and citrus fruits. Always brush your teeth after consuming any acidic substance. Don’t brush before 30 minutes of eating or drinking.

7. Mouth guard 
You grind your teeth at night while sleeping or when you are tensed. It damages the enamel and makes teeth sensitive next day. You can use mouth guard while sleeping and it will protect the enamel. It can be easily at your near pharmacy.
