How to Reduce Excess Stomach Acid

The stomach acid is mainly composed of hydrochloric acid, having pH from 1.5 to 3.5; it is too acidic for our internal stomach skin. So, the mucus produced by the same cells protects our stomach layer. But sometimes excess production of the acid causes some uncomfortable health symptoms like pain, ulcers, gas etc. which can be very painful. One of the most common symptoms is heartburn which is caused by the entry of stomach acid into the esophagus. There are various ways to treat such conditions. Some of the most useful ways are described below:

1. Natural home remedies 
However, not clinically proven but there are some common remedies which help in cases of excess stomach acid.

  • Acid cider vinegar – Take the raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water.
  • Baking soda – Baking soda is known for its neutralizing property. Take one teaspoon of baking soda and drink it after mixing it with a glass of water.
  • Aloe Vera- Aloe Vera juice is also helpful in neutralizing the stomach acid and sooth from burning sensations.
  • Ginger and chamomile tea – Mix a smaller part of ginger and chamomile while making tea. It is supposed to reduce stress, relieve nausea and help with digestion.

2. Increase salivation 
An increase production of saliva can neutralize the acidic nature of stomach acid. We can increase our saliva formation by chewing gums or sucking lozenges. There are various types of chewing gums present in the market, make sure you get good gums.

3. Salad 
We should eat salad every day and it is beneficial for our health. During heartburn avoid onions, tomatoes, cheese or high-fat dressings. Add fruits, cucumbers, carrots, green leaves etc. we can also add a little acid to it.

4. Banana and melon 
Both of these fruits have pH higher than 5 and both are beneficial for acid refluxes. However, everybody is not benefitted by them. With some people, they may not act favorably.

5. Reduce calories 
Maintaining a healthy calorie amount is important to be in shape and avoid any type of heartburn. Our daily intake of calories should be 20 times of our weight in kgs, it can vary depending on our gender, age, and work. We can use a calorie tracker to keep an eye on us.

6. Healthy eating style 
We should eat less, frequent times a day instead of larger portions at a single time. Eating larger portions will produce more amount of hydrochloric acid at a single time while eating frequently will maintain the constant amount of acid in the stomach. Eat slowly; it is important for proper digestion.

7. Avoid foods which can make the symptoms worse 
Spicy foods, acidic foods or sugary foods can make the condition of heartburn worse. Avoid such foods and drinks which contain caffeine or alcohol.

8. Do exercises 
Exercise is the best gift we can give to our body. Doing exercises will keep us away from lots of diseases and heartburn too. It maintains our body overall and keep us strong. During exercises, we burn a lot of calories and it keeps us in shape and beautiful.

9. Avoid alcohol or smoking 
Alcohol can make symptoms of acid reflux worse. As these both habits are bad for our health, it is better to cut them out completely. If you can’t, try to avoid as much as you can.

10. Medicines 
Betaine, vitamin-D supplements, and astaxanthin are common tablets which will help us during acid refluxes.
