Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of toenail which has symptoms of swelling, yellowing, crumbling and thickening of the nail. It is most often caused by continuous exposure to moisture, poor foot hygiene, and abnormal pH of the skin or weak circulation due to any disease like diabetes.
There are various home remedies which can help to cure the infection inexpensively-
1. Tea Tree oil
Tea tree oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that make it useful for treatment. Mix few drops of tea tree oil in one teaspoon of almond oil or olive oil. Apply it on the toe nail with a cotton ball. Leave it for 10 minutes and then gently scrub the nail with toothbrush. Do this 2-3 times a day. Or you can apply tea tree oil directly on the affected nail twice a day with cotton.
2. Baking soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
It creates the uninhabitable environment for the fungus. Make a paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Apply this directly to the affected nail.
3. Oregano oil
Oregano is another herb with antifungal properties. You can apply oregano oil directly to the affected toe by cotton. Alternatively, mix few drops of oregano oil with olive oil and apply it. Leave it for 30 minutes and then wash it. Apply it twice a day for few weeks.
4. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is easily available product. Simply apply a thin layer on the affected area. It’s very good for skin so you can apply it often.
5. Lavender oil
Mix few drops of lavender oil and tea tree oil. Use cotton to apply on the toenail and leave it for 10 minutes. Wash it off and dry your toes thoroughly. You can directly lavender oil to the toe before sleeping and leave it overnight.
6. Orange oil
You can apply directly orange oil to the toenail. But if you have sensitive skin, then dilute the orange oil with olive oil in equal proportion. Repeat this 2-3 times a day.
Garlic has antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Simply place chopped or crushed garlic on the toenail and cover it with a bandage.
8. Apple cider vinegar
Mix equal part of apple cider vinegar and warm water. Soak your toenail in this solution for 30 minutes daily and dry your toes thoroughly.
9. Lemon juice
Apply fresh lemon juice on the infected toenail and leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.
